The name of Immortelle genus, Helichrysum italicum, is derived from the Greek words helios (sun) and chrysos (gold) which refers to the golden color of its blossoms. In all languages its folk name is connected with long and everlasting life. This is probably derived not only from the fact that Helichrysum italicum is a tender perennial plant and that its inflorescence retains its color for long time after picking up but also from the high number of its medical applications. In ancient times it was believed that its medical potency is so high that its use brings never ending health and longevity.
Immortelle essential oil is primarily used in medicine, cosmetics and aromatherapy. Immortelle essential oil is the main active ingredient in various personal care products due to its antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-aging activity. Mixed with a carrier oil, Immortelle essential oil is used in the dermatological treatment of sun and fire burns. In combination with Lavender and Tea tree essential oils it is used to soothe various skin irritations.
Immortelle essential oil is famous as a topical antiseptic and is used for healing small wound. It is considered as a “First aid” in treatment of small bleeding wounds where, and only in such case, it can be used undiluted. It is also used in the topical treatment of arthritic conditions, joint ailments, back and hip pain, venous stasis, varicose veins, and hemorrhoids.
In aromatherapy it is considered as one that promotes emotional healing and reflection.
